LECTURE: INSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS / QUESTIONING INSTITUTIONS

Date: October 25, 2019
Location: Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design

This presentation by Strange Fire Collective, titled Institutional Questions / Questioning Institutions, focused on broad concerns that mirror the collective's mission to challenge power, institutional systems, and access. Pulling from Strange Fire's archive of 200+ interviews, the collective addresses three topics through an intersectional lens: Policing Bodies, Political Action, and Access to Power. Each topic is addressed through the work and words of artists, curators, and writers who engage these questions from unique and diverse perspectives. Ultimately, this also proves how the Strange Fire platform can serve as an educational resource to address complex topics in the classroom with an intersectional approach.

This presentation was developed as part of MIAD’s Creativity Series—which brings distinctive and internationally renowned creatives to Milwaukee to engage the community in new ways of thinking about, and appreciating, the arts—and was a keynote presentation at the Society of Photographic Education’s Midwest Chapter Conference.
